THESE TANGY SWEET AND SOUR MEATBALLS ARE SURE TO PLEASE VIRTUALLY EVERYONE AND CAN BE MADE VEGAN!
INGREDIENTS FOR MEATBALLS:
50g SESAME PITA SHARDS GROUND
1 EGG OR EQUIVALANT SUBSTITUTE
1 TSP BLACK PEPPER GROUND
1 TSP WHITE PEPPER GROUND
1 TSP MUSTARD POWDER
1/2 TSP 5 SPICE POWDER
1 TSP OR MORE OF FRESH GROUND GINGER
1 TBSP GREEN ONION FINELY CHOPPED
1 TSP GF SOY/TAMARI OR BRAGGS
1 TSP SESAME OIL
1 TBSP CHOPPED GARLIC OR 1 TSP GARLIC POWDER
1 TBSP HONEY
400-600g OF GROUND PROTEIN OF YOUR CHOICE (YOU CAN USE YOUR FAVOURITE VEGAN MEATBALL RECIPE)
INGREDIENTS FOR SAUCE:
1 TBSP GF SOY/TAMARI OR BRAGGS
1 TSP SESAME OIL
3 TBSP HONEY/OR SUGAR OR SUBSTITUE
1 TBSP RICE WINE VINEGAR/MIRIN
1 TSP MOLASSAS
1 OR 2 STAR ANISE (OPTIONAL)
INSTRUCTIONS:
TO START, USING A FOOD PROCESSOR, MORTAR, OR ZIPLOCK BAG AND ROLLING PIN, CRUSH SESAME PITA SHARDS TILL SEMI FINE. IT'S NOT NESSESARY TO GRIND TO DUST.
ADD ALL INGREDIENTS TO A LARGE MIXING BOWL AND MIX WELL. PLACE IN FRIDGE FOR UP TO 24 HOURS TO LET FLAVOURS MARRY.
ROLL MEATBALLS APPROXIMATELY 1.5 INCH AND PLACE IN HEATED PAN WITH 1 TBSP OIL OF CHOICE.
BROWN MEATBALLS WELL AND ADD THE SAUCE INGREDIENTS.
BRING THE SAUCE TO A BOIL AND REDUCE HEAT TO LOW AND SIMMER TILL THE SAUCE HAS THICKENED TO GLAZE.
SERVE OVER STEAMED RICE WITH CHOICE OF VEG.
